Toothache Treatment Options

A toothache is a term for any pain in the region of your teeth and jaw. The pain may be intermittent or constant, mild or severe. You may notice a feeling of tenderness or sensitivity to hot and cold. Sometimes the exact origin of the pain is difficult to pinpoint. When your tooth is causing pain, you may even feel it in your ears or sinuses instead.

If your ache lasts for more than 24 hours, please call Lawrence Zabner, DMD and set up an appointment to meet with our dentist, Dr. Zabner, as soon as possible. We’ll help you settle on the best course of treatment, depending on the source of the pain.

Possible sources include tooth decay, for which you will need a dental filling or crown, a pulp infection, for which you’ll need a root canal, a microscopic crack in your tooth that will need repairs, or gum disease or a TMJ disorder, of which will require a more long-term variety of treatments.

While you are waiting for your appointment, try these home remedies for temporary relief:
-Take ibuprofen to reduce swelling
-Mix a teaspoon of salt in water and gurgle
-Hold a cold compress to the side of your cheek for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.
